Can't find a Sound? Replicate it!
Now this is going to get a little advanced and unorthodox, but the outcome is so rewarding. Let's say you have access to a sound bank that contains thousands of different sounds from A-Z, but there's a specific sound you just can't find (Believe me when I say, this is one of the most frustrating things to happen.). Guess I'm changing the scene now to appease my lack of resource. Wrong, it's time to get a little creative and think outside the box, and I guarantee you this is not something they taught you in school.
Dividing a sound up
Still can't find the sound you're looking for? Break it down. For example, let's take a guy throwing up on rocks outside. Okay easy, the first step to building it, have the outdoor ambience and you can vocally record yourself making the throwing up sound. Boom, there's two aspects that make up a guy throwing up outside on a pile of stones. But now how do I get sound of the actual throw up leaving his mouth and then splattering on the rocks. I'm no foley artist so I'm not going to go out and record it. I'll just look for similar sounds in my sound bank, and what I found was resourceful. So, I started by thinking what sounds are close to what I'm looking for. Well, I need a watery sound, but also the effect of it being poured onto the ground. And to my surprise I found a sound of someone pouring water on to rocks. Now there were several closely related variations of someone pouring water on the ground and at different speeds (such as dumping or gently pouring), but I ended up identifying the most relatable one associated with the tempo and speed of someone throwing up. With a little editing, the sound now sounded more like a projectile as opposed to just dumping water out on the rocks. I still needed to get the squishy aspect of the vomit leaving the mouth and hitting the ground. I searched around for a bit until I came across gory noises of guts and blood. Totally not my first thought to add this effect, but in the end with a few tweaks it sounded close enough that it could pass off as throw up. And when you put everything together this is the outcome.
